We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays your most valuable asset. One of the best ways we know to help, is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don’t know could save thousands of dollars.
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are structures that hold back rock and soil from a building. They prevent erosion and provide support for vertical grade changes. Retaining walls are usually made from stone, mansonry, concrete, brick, vinyl, timber or steel.
It is important that a retaining wall be designed and installed properly. The weep holes should not be too shallow, in order to prevent the wall from bowing, leaning, and settling. Weep holes allows the moisture that builds up between the wall and the dirt to escape.
Proper drainage behind the retaining wall is essential. Drainage materials help reduce pressure and maintain stability.
Wood retaining walls will need to be repaired with pressure treated lumber and masonry retaining walls are more expensive to repair. Short landscaping walls are often made from stone or concrete units. Whatever the material the wall is made out of, proper grading behind the wall is essential.
Please feel free to forward this maintenance tip to your friends and/or family members so they too can maintain their real estate investment.
