We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays your most valuable asset.  One of the best ways we know to help, is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don’t know could save thousands of dollars.

Let's Move In

During a move, life gets complicated and it is easy to overlook some of the logistics. If you decide to hire a moving team there are a couple things you should keep in mind.

The Better Business Bureau gets thousands of complaints every year about moving companies. The complaints report that companies have gone over in their estimates, lost or damaged items, or missed pick up and delivery times.

Experts suggest that you choose your moving company six to eight weeks ahead of the move. Remember this is a highly important decision and it is important that you know about the company that will handle all of your worldly possessions. The moving company needs to be reputable and supply a list of references.

First and foremost you should hire a moving company that is licensed and insured. Movers should be registered by the State Department of Transportation and Interstate movers need to be licensed by the Interstate Commerce Commission.

It is a good idea to get estimates from at least three different moving companies. The best way to ensure an accurate quote is to have the estimate based on a first hand inspection of your home's contents.

There are two different types of estimates non-binding and binding. Non-binding estimates base the moving cost on a homes contents and how long it will take to move them. There is usually no guarantee that the final cost will not exceed the non-binding estimate. Binding estimates are superior. You may be charged extra for a mover to bind the estimate, but the cost is predetermined and non negotiable. With a binding estimate the mover is financially responsible for the accuracy of the estimate.

Next, you need to consider what type of insurance you need. There are two different levels of insurance, released value and full protection value. Full protection value costs more but will be the most comprehensive coverage. It ensures that the homeowner will be reimbursed if anything is damaged or broken.

Make sure the company's workers are covered by insurance.

Call the provided list of references. A few extra steps before hiring a moving company can save thousands of dollars as well as future pain and hardship.

We hope these tips will provide you an easier, more relaxed move.

Please feel free to forward this maintenance tip to your friends and/or family members so they too can maintain their real estate investment.
