Cross Connections
If cross connection occurs it can create a serious, even life threatening situation.
Cross connections is when water in the drain side of a plumbing system mixes with the potable or drinkable side of the plumbing.
When this occurs pesticides, antifreeze, paint chemicals or other types of contamination find it's way into a home's drinking water.
This can happen when pressure in the drain side is greater than the supply side.
Back pressure can occur when there is a break in water mains such as a fire hose connecting to a hydrant.
When a hose is connected to a faucet, then left in a mud puddle, and back pressure occurs, bacteria from the mud could be drawn into the home's water supply.
We recommend a back flow prevention valve be on all outside faucets. These are valves that make sure that water flows one way, out of a faucet.
Never leave the end of a hose in a pool or spa. Also, never use your home water heater to heat a pool.
According to an article written in the American Society of Home Inspectors magazine (ASHI Reporter), cross connections is the least understood, yet the most hazardous aspect of plumbing. We hope you have found these tips informative and effective in eliminating cross connections.
